so, at most forum sites i have been to, there is at least one thread about video games that different people play, and usually one thats exclusively for asking questions about video games, that maybe people have, and others may have an answer for. i figured we may want something of this nature, and figured, hey i've got a burning video game question, why dont i put it on the forum?"

so here goes: does anyone know how to, on Unreal Tournament 3, save a game in progress?? i have yet to see an option where i can save my campaign, or even a match, and it really bugs me to have to restart the game everytime i turn it on.

Man, I'm not sure about the save process. Since no one jumped in here yet I thought I would.

So, here's a grab bag of my favorite games.

Borderlands (picked it up last night, the wife and I are enjoying family time killing pygmy raiders together)
fallout 3
wizardry 1-3 (after that the get a little silly) Looking to get a clone to play on pc.
Temple of apshai and its sequel/prequel (also looking to get this on pc)
Elderscrolls, morrowind.
Baldurs gate(s) and chapions of norrath...
Dynasty warriors 4 (please, don't let that secret get out... wait... too late)
All of the syphon filters (although they kinda had a short shelf life, I loved them at the time.)

I love 2 and 4 player coop games (offline) as My Son Jonathan and wife Angie all like playing together. Guess I'm reall lucky that way.

Interesting note, the saving in borderlands is a little wonky. Instead of having a choice of when you save, you save on exit and any time youare near a new U post... wierd huh?

Maybe we need a videogame section?

Are computergames included in videogames?
Or is it only consoles?

So many questions....

Yay finally a topic so close to my heart i could cry (i wont but i could)

Unreal tornament is a good game but a bad case of minimum workload and consistency, the game has no save button in progress most maps should only take 15-20 mins to complete anyways so i think they thought it would be redundant).

However the actions on the menus aren't clear (ever notice you select an option and then have to conciously look at the other side of the screen to find out what it does? -yes its petty but i need to look at stuff like that as part of my ubisoft approved RGD, or rational game design.)

Computergames and Videogames are for lack of a twenty page dissertation which most would find exceptionally boring, are essentially the same thing, although "computergames" were originally designed so you could play them whilst pretending to do work.

Saving games is a tricky choice for developers, however each game should allow the player to save whenever, dead rising for example is a sufferer of this, but it adds to the atmosphere. Is it bad that i quite like the borderlands save system from the sound of it, Just have to remember to exit the game instead of switching it off.

As for games i own / played, i could fill up a whole topic myself, so i wont bore you all,

I do hoever want your opinion, about achievements for xbox 360 games, trophies on pc and ps3. Do they really inspire people, are they worthwhile? do they make the player appease a budding designers wish fo you to do something you would never do in the game in a million years? or is it a way of having a competition and for developers to make money? (halo 3 and gears of war 2 with achievements only available through download packs?)

for me personally, i only look at trophies if i am thoroughly bored, and then only go after a particular trophy if the name sounds cool and wont describe what i need to do to unlock it (the obscure name to task principle). The one thing that bugs me a little bit, is how on a number of games, over half of the trophies/achievements are based purely in multi-player, which is something i just dont do on my playstation.

Interesting topic, thought I should jump on board here.

I'm a PC-Only gamer - 3rd generation consoles are cut down PC's IMO, so I have zero enthusiasm for buying or gaming on one (though working on them is a different matter).

As a Gamer and Games Developer, I've got a catalog of games that goes back to the mid 80's, complete with the systems to play them on and enjoy a vast and diverse range of gaming experiences.

With Trophies and Achievements, I can give you both prospectives on this.
As a gamer, the drive to achieve 100% completion on any game gives a sense of competition against ones self. Combined with friends and family who play the same game, you can easily challenge someone you know to beat a trophy or achievement before you do - it's essentially a head-to-head contest with either yourself or someone else without need for the internet or sharing the screen.

From a developers point of view, Achievements and Trophies increase the limits of the game by challenging the player to do something that's either tricky to achieve or simply requires a certain degree of skill in the right circumstance. It's basically a very very cheap (defined by cost in development hours) way of increasing the potential of the game without writing a new campaign or half dozen race tracks!

For the record - if a PC game has achievements or trophies or some such, I'll always play and re-play the game until I've ace'd it, with 1 exception - I never found all the packages in GTA:VC!!!!!!

We should have a board set up for computer/video gaming, definitely, complete with How-To and Tech Help sections!

Current Played Games : NFS:Shift, DoW2 (The Last Stand only), COH
Games Always Installed : Jedi Knight Academy, Spore, DoW(all), KOTOR 1 & 2

I find it really interesting to get the view of a developer on this, for me i am split on two paths much like CR (maybe its a games industry thing :D)

on one hand games need instant gratification, and where before it was enough simply to give the player a cool sword or something, it is really hard to keep the player focused on the task at hand when all they seem to do is "grind". Now this is not to say MMORPG's are bad, as they are an altogether different beast, the gratification of that game is seeing your player progress, so in other games where such a change isn't as distinct the achievements are brought in to make the player feel the same way. They are after all called achievements.

However in some of the games i have played (and yes i have written Game design portfolios which have done the same) Achievements can have the opposite effect, they can be too hard or specific, (kill 7 enemies on 7 maps on the 7 day of the 7 month for example (not a real achievement cause people would hate it) Thats just infuriating, in the same way that games are asking you to play in a manner you wouldn't, 100% good on fable 2 etc yes there are few who would play the game like that, but not only is it hard, it also forces the player to choose one path, and as i have had drilled into my head over my design lectures, Games are a series of choices, and it is the players wants and needs that guide the choices thet make.

Also achievements for not achieving anything bugs me, level complete achievements, i dont feel anything good about beating a level, i have to do that to finish the game.

Secret achievements are good in one aspect and bad for another, like gamers like ensis who don't pay particular attention to them they're ok, if you get it all the better, But for those who needs to drive themselves on to play the game more is a real sticking point.

still everytone has opposing views and you cant please everyone, so what are other peoples opinions, Ps i have loads of debates about gameplay mechanics etc so you have my vote for a new board.

and yes CR i never found all the packages either :(

the one argument i have for that Jasp, is Killzone 2. Either the game design/learning curve were brilliantly executed, or someone fethed up somewhere and made the game pretty hard (as an experienced FPS player, i found myself dead far too often for "easy" mode, and so beating some of those levels were an achievement in itself)

i did, however enjoy the "trophies" at the end of MGS4, where you "unlocked" animal rankings, based on all of you stats throughout the game, ie; how many alerts you triggered, how many enemies you waxed, how much ammo you used to wax said enemies, etc.

Now waiting for a games forum................

..........
..........

ok, until it appears, I'll add my 2/100€

As last century computer gamer, I do not need any throphy/achievement.
Give me a nice highscore and I am happy.
Let me finish a game and look at the aw - ( some / ful ) endsequence and i may also be happy.

But as is , i dont care for these multipatch "games". Was used to complete games without repairs
(and ruining savegames ), including a manual and maybe a map.

Since we know where i am coming from ( hope so, if not tell me and i'll expand to jasp size posts ),
let me make it short :

Throphys / achievements are only aiming at the "collectors" in a game.
Competition happens in-game, not with "i haz moar XXX", so i doubt the worth of those throphys achievements.

BTW, post 1717
