In practice for next weeks tournament both sides were eager to try out tactics and fine tune lists. We faced a double DA list that was based on bikes and termies, their tactic to rush the bikes then home in with termies.

Wow what a great game.

We went second, and deployed behind the generous cover of ruined buildings, our rhinos covering both vindicators. Yes we castled, and deployed so that a deathwing assault would lead to many mishaps. The bikes even with turbo boost couldn’t get to a decent position. They set up fairly spread out, but kept one squad to deep strike.

Turn 1 saw the bikes race forward, and pop a rhino with a meltagun at long range. The RG combat squad looses one man and then another 2 marines to termie fire. On the other flank the other bike squad managed to get a questionable charge on the Blood Angels death company, it would be a messy fight.

On our turn the rhino walls moved and allowed the vindis to get targets, the retribution shot aimed at the bikes curled wide and hit a termie squad instead, taking out one unlucky deathwing. We still held back the jumpers, while the death company continued to pull riders from the saddle in combat. With both units fearless it would take a while. The sternguard dropped alone behind their vindicator and immobilized it with 2 combi plasma shots and ripped off the ig gun – job done.

They had a nasty turn 2 as the reserve term squad teleported in to heavily damage a Blood Angel tac squad, while the Ravenwing bike squad on my side took out a vindi cannon with another extreme range melta shot. Take note as this squad DOES get whats coming to them. The death company finally took out all the bikes and made way for Belials command squad on the left flank, the squad hiding for fear of a vindi shot (note fear factor!) One termie squad got a questionable line of sight to the sterns and ripped through 3 members , leaving just 2 marines.

They had 3 objectives so on our turn 2 the jumpers came out, with the BA Honour Guard smashing into the teleported termies. Captain levitas and his five man assault squad jumped out but rolled a bad fleet roll. Squad Titus supported the Honour Guard by assaulting the teleported termies. The vindi with the cannon drove up and blocked the bikes movement, aiming to stop their support. The other vindi hit a termie squad and took out two of its number. The death company and chaplain smashed into belials squad, over the next 2 turns they would wipe out belial and leave only one termie, but at the expense of the squad.

Their turn 3 and it gets interesting. The bikes assault squad titus in support of their termies. The honour guard, termie squad and my assault squad titus are wiped out while the bikes consolidate towards my lines. Two squads of termies let rip into Captain levitas and his assault squad. When the smoke clears he has no squad and the captain himself is left with one wound – it would be enough.

The game then switched and suddenly things began to change our way. We used rhinos to block assaults and made every stormbolter shot count. The last 2 men of Tac squad siris were joined by mt final 5 man assault squad and tac squad Immotus in their rhino. The last two stern guard gunned down 3 termies with their combi plasmas, while storm bolter fire claimed 3 termies. Boltpistols and support from the blood angel tacs poured in. The single wound captain levitas tore apart 3 termies, finishing off the squad. While the 2 mane of squad tac siris (inc sgt) wipe out the bikes with the aid of 5 man assault.

Their turn 4 and their worried. They have no bikes, but still 3 full squads and one lone guy holding an objective. They foolishly turn one squad to deal with the 2 sternguard, which they do. The other squad decides to take the easy prize of one wound captain levitas – but fail to hit and wound with anything! Oh dear. The last squad moves towards the blood angel tacs and takes 4 out.

Our turn 4 and its game time. Levitas and the 5 man assault squad line up to assault the termei squad, boltpistols taking out 2! While again storm boltger fire and lascannon from the bA tacs begin to thin their number. We have 2 objectives each. While squad immotus joins the blood angel tac squad in gunning down a termie squad to all but one man. Levitas tears apart another termie squad leaving one full squad with librarian, 1 loan termie holding an objective and one other lone termie with LCs.

Turn 5 the librarian squad takes an objective and guns down an assault marine. While the LC termie charges the blood angel tacs, taking out 3 but having the BA sgt powerfist his face in return.

The last turn and the vindi lines up a shot on the single termie holding an objective – he gets it. Cpt Levitas and assault squad finish off last termies. Tabled!

Win – Tabled

Game ratings!
Fun: 10/10 nailbiter

Our opponents: 8/10 They were proxying some stuff (including a piece of foam representing a vindi) but both guys are good gamers and have a solid list for the tourney. Seem to be getting better every time I play them.

Perfect plan: 9/10 We castled to deny deathwing assault, and used rhinos to block return fire from assaults. We had speed and made it count. We also fired every gun at termies, making them roll dice from boltpistols and stotrmbolters on tanks.

Best overall unit: On my side I would say Captain Levitas, on a single wound he took a full terminator squad firing at him and then proceeded to take out 3 squads. One of his more legendary games. For the Blood Angels you have to say the ten man Death Company. Who held off the left flank and mobbed several units.

Most damaging enemy unit: Massed terminator fire!

Firing blanks: one vindi – but that’s why I take 2. One always gets blown up or fails to hit, while the other usually deals out pain on a plate.

Yet another epic win on your front! Congratz =)

It sounds pretty darn scary having to face off that many termies. Glad you pulled through =)

We are now up against live, hostile targets. So, if Little Red Riding Hood should show up with a bazooka and a bad attitude, I expect you to chin the b!tch.

My missus says I've got the mental age of my unborn baby girl, but what does she know?

It was a good game, and for cemented why I prefer rhinos over pods. They stopped so much retaliation on our units that won combats, just by blocking line of sights, and then moving to block again.

I think if they were ten man squads it would have been tough, but yeah that many termies is always scary.

The scary thing is last years double winners. 9 killa kans combined with mech chaos vindi combo.

We dont have anything that can handle that many cans, so hope we dont face them and they draw the scissors to their paper early on.

Wow, awesome game - wish i could have been able to watch it!

Smart deployment and good use of the rhinos, i'm guessing you're pleased with the sternguard?

Blood Angel lists are awesome, so many jumpers+ DC. Really wish they had a more updated codex.

Great army list theme on both sides of this battle too.

The wild thing about kill kan mobs is that they actually handle MCs pretty well. Sure, the MC might take one or two out, but its going to be getting a TON of str 10 hits in return, and theres gonna be alot more killa kans in that list than MCs in the opposing ones.

Maybe if you land 2 really really lucky vindicator plates on the kans and send the jumpers to krak the chaos vindies...
