Okay, this is my currently unnamed Counts as Kahn figure.

Here's a list of possible stuff to discuss...

1. How to get rid of the shield in the aquila to remove all traces of kit bashed company champion parts.
2. Tips on taking more dramatic and cool looking photos.
3. proof of concept, will this be okay as a counts as kahn mini, and if not what games would he get into?
4. Ways to make this mini more rg.
5. modeling tips etc on construction technique.

Right, to make the model look less like it's based from the company champion :-

I'd have used a different chest piece for certain, however I'm guessing you've already glued it, so you'll need to do this the hard way. If you have a small hand-held drill like a Dremmel Driver or Versatip, then it's a simple matter of using the right grinding disk and a steady hand. The other option is to grab your craft knife and cut the shield away, then file the aquila away - this being the slower of the two options.

To make it more 'Raven Guard' like, well, a more dynamic pose pretty much seals it (and covers another of your questions). I'd go for a pose that looks like he's actually about to strike, instead of standing there pointing to the stars. This will take a lot of cutting, pinning and greenstuff though, so its up to you. I can give you ideas on 'dynamic poses', just ask if you're interested.

Construction technique is really down to you and how you like to model your marines. I personally like to build them up quickly, so simple cuts on elbows, wrists, knees and such are about all I ever do, with bluetack or other similar medium used to hold the model while I find the pose I want, then glue as I remove the bluetack - its fast enough and gives me enough flexibility in modeling for my liking. I think W.R. Jasp goes into a lot more effort though ;)

Taking pictures is all down to lighting. If you check out some of Lev's pics, you'll see they're all backed in white, and all well lit. This is because White background reflects lots of light, providing a solid contrast to the model while also iluminating the back of the model at the same time. A solid white light source should be used from above the camera, casting as little shadow as possible while illuminating the entire side of the model being photographed. With enough lighting, you'll not need Flash on your camera, though it could help. Use a solid platform to hold your Camera to avoid shake and blurr, and always avoid 'digital zoom' - it destroys quality just to get a closer shot.

Hope that helps fella =)

Hey guys!

Thanks for the detailed post CR... lots to consider. Any advice on posing is welcome!

I need to get my tooling together, so I'm not doing stuff at work, that'll eventually get me into trouble. I get way too distracted with the model and cant compartmentalise it into my break or lunch time.

So, I can get the dremmeling done here, and then put it away in my car... ;)

As for it being already glued, yep! I plan on doing multiple versions of each hq. So I'm okay painting this one to complettion and starting over... I need to hone my skills and if I continue doing new stuff all of the time, I'm never going to develop technique.. and have a lot of cruddy models...

These shots were composed in just a few minutes. I'm using no zoom (but it grabbed the bolt pistol as its point of focus, wierd, gotta work on that!) macros, a stand with 10 second timer. The background was impromtu, I need to stage stuff a little better. I used the kitchen overhead light and my modeling light held about 2 feet over the model for accent lighting. I also avoid flash, its just too powerful a little bugger and creates glare.

Gotta go, more soon!

Pen

Thanks again for the advice cr!

So, I'll post a more active looking version 2 when I put him together.

The version in the photo is painted and in the paint section!

CR, I took some time with your advice and I'm tooling up Chaplain Bartok. Thanks everybody for their input.
