Ok so i was given a couple tanks on the weekend. The previous owner thought they were beyond repair, and donated them to be made into terrain.

He said he was happy for me to use them as tanks, if i could repair them (which i think i can!).

Only issue, is the amount of paint they have on them. I know one of them has atleast 4 different paint schemes layered onto it.

Anyone ever tried stripping paint from entire tanks?

should be quite similar to stripping regular minis, only using abit more fluids for taking the paint off. that, and i would think that itd take some more time to take off the paint from such large surface areas.

For mini's, i have a jar full of Methylated spirits that i just drop the mini in, come back a couple days later and usually the paint had just fallen away. maybe i'll try and get a big container and lots of Metho?

Right ok, the big strripping minis debate

you can either do it the hard way, (very very fine sandpaper)

or by far the simpler version.

get a big plastic tub, (like something you would put food in, make sure it fits your model in length ways, and is at least half the height of the model.

get a bottle of simple green (apparently this works well) or dettol antiseptic disinfectant, (much easier to get if your in the uk). Now place your tank into the plastic tub and fill the tub so that the liquid come to about half way up the tank. leave this for about 8-12 hours, ( you can leave it over night but i tend to find that the liquids because they react with acrylic (what GW paints are made outta) they can soften the plastic of the kits itself. It doesn't do any harm to it from what i can see, but it may lose some of the surface detailing etc.

if your worried try it on a the tank you think is least likely to be salvaged, just in case something goes wrong.

take a toothbrush andscrub the paint, this should work and keep the plastic firmer. Flip the tank over and placed the un stripped side into the box. repeat the process.

If the paint doesn't come off, or not all of it does. leave it for a day to air off. take some fine sand paper and rub it all over the model. then repeat the previous steps.

Dettol is a great thing to use, as it turns the paint into a thick liquid (that can stick anywhere so be careful with the toothbrush.) but 9/10 times the paint just slides or lifts off the model.

Just hope you haven't used fragrant ones i did mine in pine dettol the first time i did it, and they still after a year smell like a forest :P

The Shadowsword I got as a gift from an old friend still smells of stale Tobacco...maybe I should try the Dettol treatment...

Is there a dettol for every taste?
    - a hospital
    - a forest
    - maybe old socks too?
