Alright gents...Levitas' post has given me the idea that what we need is something to differentiate us.

While most, would say that it's just our Corvus helmets, jump packs and lightning claws give us that aesthetic, i for one am interested in trying to find more ways to make use more differentiated...

A good example of this would be Corvinvs' Pre-Heresy Jump Packs.

While i'm not asking everyone to make those turbine jump packs, i am thinking of how we can make stylized wings that we can put on our jump packs. It would be something very different and i think it would make our armies look that much more special. It would help lock the image of the Raven Guard into other players' minds and hopefully one day lock themselves into the minds of those who could make a difference at GW.

So, this thread is about making something unique for the Raven Guard...

Stylized Raven Guard Wings is something we could work on. Perhaps not exactly like Corvinvs' but pretty similar.

Other than that, i'm also thinking of other ways we could make the Raven Guard look different. I've mentioned items that are commonly associated with the Raven Guard chapter: Corvus Helmets, and Lightning claws. Lets try and come up with something to make these more uniquely Raven Guard...

Post your suggestions/thoughts/opinions here...but please remember, that for suggestions, they should be something that is easy for everyone to do, but at the same time must look different enough so that when people see these items, they will immediately think "Ah! Thats a Raven Guard army!"

Lets go Gentlemen.

Maybe you could try and paint a raven head on the back of the jump pack then add wings....
Trying to think of suggestions

There is a great illustration of a Raven Guard army deploying on a planet at the front of the BGB (one of the two-page B&W illustrations) that gives some great ideas on how to distinguish the Raven Guard. Some examples:

1) Small raven skulls as decoration on shoulderpads, etc.

2) A raven "mascot" resting on the arm of a standard bearer.

3) Concentration of old, ornate armor among the Veteran and Command Squads.

Just take a bit of time and look over the details of this great illustration - it is well worth it.

Expensive - I know, but I've given every officer the old Marneus Calgar backpack with the eagle heads, and those with jumppacks all havbe Shrike's jumpack. On the cheaper side, I've sculpted bird skulls on to helmets.

Some weeks ago, while checkin' coolminiornot for ideas about our RGs, I've found a nice pre-heresy ravenguard chaplain with jump pack.
The shoulderpads had been decorated with black feathers made with green stuff.
using green stuff is not so easy, but feathers shouldn't be such a problem: it's just a matter of small flat pieces of green stuff with parallel lines pattern (damn what a horrible explanation... forgive me)
Ok, because my English is not THAT good :P I'll try to find out the model again and post the image...
Hope it will be userful!

My God! I never noticed that they were Raven Guard Marines! Thats a fantastic find! Good Eye KS :D

That picture does give me good ideas...What do you guys think about those small Extra shoulder pad things?

Or how about Raven beaks strung together across the shoulder pad?

Jed, that sounds like a good idea, but as you said, it's expensive. :(

I know what you're talking about Shinigami, thats also an idea...The Raven feathers is interesting.

Not positive, but you may be able to get feathers from either some Dark Angel sprues (deathwing specifically) or from some Wood Elves in Fantasy.

If you plan on making things like raven skulls in large numbers, make a mold. Get some green stuff and add a release agent (like vegetable oil). Press in your original, making a negative impression. Remove the original and let the green stuff harden. You now have a mold to make more. Just add more release agent and press in more green stuff. It helps if you have a pin inserted to help remove the new copy.

Just some ideas to make our Raven Guard unique.

Moulds are definitely the way to go here...

Shinigami got the brilliant idea of making Talons for veteran assault marine boots. I like the idea because it conveys how the Raven Guard have a higher percentage of older armour :D

What do you guys think? And ideas on how to make it easier to mass produce?

:? I'm trying some experiments of scratch building talons on a macragge.box s. marine
The most easy way would be cutting a chaos raptor talon and clone it by using molds.....
But I don't like the idea of cutting pieces off a poor metal raptor  So I'm gonna try scratch build my own talons before doin' so. I'll keep u up to date :)

I'm a big time mold maker. Silicone rubber and 1:1 plastic is my friend.

I currently use Shrike's jump pack for all my assault marines (the one with the feathers and bird skull on it). I also use the Calgar eagle pack for all my tack squads.
I got a ton of feathers from the Games Day Bit Conversion Contest since no one was using the Brittonian sprues and each one had like 3 or four extra feathers on it.
My newest find is the metal Exarch wings that I've molded. They are a bit sci-fi at the base, but with green stuff I'm sure we can make wings folded down on the back of terminators or something

In all honesty though, the one thing that makes us really stand out(imho) is the fact our marines loose the pigment in their skin as time goes on. Some of my coolest looking marines are the ones with the grayish/white faces and the dark eyes. It's also a good conversation starter when people ask why I've painted them like that.

you could try and use the ever handy combat knife stick them onto...weel wherever you want to stick them, and then cut away at the underside, so you get a curved bottom edge. or make it more angular like ¬ :P thats what i might try and do on the new black reach kit!

Never seen em with blue before... not sure I like that... but I can't talk, I still use the green/red/yellow shoulderpad trim color scheme.

Feathers would be awesome:

Get some very thin wire, welding wire is best.
Now, go back to you childhood where you modelled using papier mâché. Rediscover that.
Fold a piece of newspaper soaked in the sticky stuff around the little piece of wire.
Have 3mm of the wire free of the paper, we need that to insert into .... later dudes :)
Let the damn thing dry, I mean let it dry. This works best if it's hard and dry (keep smart remarks to yourselves :) )
Find a hideously sharp hobbyknife and carve out feather. You really only need 1 feather stuck to the wire, cut a few extras to glue on, overlapping, like 3 in a bundle.
Paint the thing.
Drill two holes in your helmets, behind the "ears" if they have them, Insert the 3mm of the wire into the helmet and ...
Viola, you have a Raven Guard with feathers on the roof.

I have not done this in a such a small scale, but I managed to convert the terrible termagents in the tyranid hormagaunt/termagant box into gargoyles.

Just a thought.
