Following a comment by Pendrecki in another thread, I'd thought I'd share how I paint gold and silver/iron.
I know GW Eavy Metal team seem to like the non-metallic metallics, but I prefer the standard metallic paints.
As I use GW paints exclusively, all the colours refer to their range. Once I borrow work's camera again, I'll add in a set of step by step photos. As with the painting black thread, please share your tips and tricks.

Gold.
1) Paint the area black.
2) Then apply a basecoat of brass.
3) For the next coat, apply burnished gold, leaving brass only in the deepest recesses.
4) Once dry, apply shining gold to the raised areas, followed by 1/1 mix of shining gold and mithril silver on the most raised parts.
5) Finally, use pure mithril silver on the very highest points/corners.

When painting eagles, as on chest armour, bolters etc, I add a wash of black ink between steps 3 and 4 - it can be worth adding a second, dry brushed coat of burnished gold before step 4 if you do use a wash.

Brass
Follow steps 1 to 4 above, but using the shining gold very sparingly. For a tarnished look, use a green wash before step 4. Painting Wood Elves, I've found that a red wash can give a warm, in tune with nature type look.

Steel/Silver
1) Paint the area black
2) Apply a basecoat of boltgun metal.
3) Use a 1/1 mix of boltgun metal and mithril silver: apply it to the raised areas.
4) Use pure mithril silver as a final stage highlight on the most raised areas.

For silver, follow steps 1 and 2, then apply mithril silver, leaving the basecoat in the recesses. Use a black wash sparingly, then drybrush with mithril silver.

For a charred look, eg melta gun muzzles, I apply a liberal black wash, followed by a liberal brown wash , followed up by a final black wash. Finally, I rehighlight the edges with the mithril silver or shining gold. I use the same trick around engine exhausts, but in the order, brown, black, brown.

Hi Jed,

Thanks for the post man! I will tinker with this. I feel that my Aqiulas need a lot of work, I might try metallic ones using your method, I've been doing white ones (seemed like the RG way to go) but these don't pop enough.
