So, you want to paint Black. Well much like white it can be tricky and there is a multitude of ways to paint it. Here be an indepth list of the methods we use. New ravens you are advised to try a few and see what you like and works best, also remember that you will be painting a lot of it so ensure you enjoy it. Old ravens, list your arcane methods and create a one-stop-shop for new members.

Levitas Black:

Spray Black. Go over the model with a slightly watered down chaos black (yes the spray is a slightly different shade)

Troop quality: Mix Shadow grey with chaos black, you want this to be fairly dark with 75% black. Then paint that on as the first highlight, dont worry f it looks too dark.
Then do another mix, with perhaps 75% Shadow grey with black. Then paint this on as the final highlight with a FINE brush, leaving the darker highlight under it still showing.

HQs: As above, but use pure shadow grey as a final 3rd highlight.

You can go and and add white to the shadow grey for a 4th highlight, but its not needed unless your really showcasing. This method is fairly quck, I can highlight all the black in about 30mins.

Vehicles: Miss out the the first highlights and go staright to shadow grey. Use the side of a good brush (fine detail) and run it along the edges. All the edges. Then go back and tidy it up with black. You want a crisp highlight on the very edges only.

I then weather my tanks, but thats optional (chipped paint and mud etc)

My Method

Adeptus Battlegrey as your first one, followed by codex grey as your second. Simple, and effective.

ive got a very quick and lazy way of doing black - works fine for quick painting troop squads

spray matt balck, drybrush a pale grey - was using old old elf grey, but since they dont make that any more its fortress grey now, then ink it black all over with the old style ink not the new washes and it dries to a good off black finish with highlighted edges, the ink takes the harsh chalkyness from the drybrushing nicely away !

Nearly the same as LordAK :

i. Chaos Black Spray
ii. very dilued Chaos Black
iii. Chaos Black + Adeptus Battlegrey (50/50)
iv. Adeptus Battlegrey
v. Astronomican Grey as a final thin highlight.

The dilued Chaos Black is for the model to be perfectly coated in black,
I never manage to get this result just with Spray.

And yes, it's a long process ...

Little off topic, but I use the same Astronomican Grey as a base coat to paint white parts on black.
(like eagles on Marine chest).

My method takes ages but I think it looks nice on large flat(ish) areas.

Firstly, I basecoat Codex Grey. I then apply layers of Badab Black wash, with each coat covering less of the area to be painted. It gains a very smooth highlight with no blending skill necessary, as long as you have time or limit it to important models.

I've tested to my own surprise a new way to highlight black...

Try to mix chaos black with Elf Flesh (yes I mean Elf flesh !)
CB/EF 75/25
CB/EF 50/50
CB/EF 25/75

This one was given me by a really good painter, and it produce nice natural highlight (a little warn as you were under sunshine)
Just try it, I found it awesome.

I will post pics with that one.

I'll post my technique as it's different to all posts so far.
1) Chaos Black undercoat
2) Chaos Black to cover any bits missed by the spray.
3) Mix Chaos Black and Regal Blue to highlight edges of armour plates
4) Go over the highlights with pure Regal Blue
5) Finally mix Enchanted blue and regal blue for a final highlight of, for example, corners on jumppacks.
6) Then bring out the Chaos Black again to tidy any wobbly highlights.
