Last night I had a 3way battle against Necrons and Tyranids (who ofcourse won). The point though is:

The necron player had 1 unit of destroyers and 2 units of heavy destroyers. within 6 inches was a lord with resurection orb. What he claimed was that, after a shooting and charge that I did on his heavy destroyers (both units) that he could claim a "We'll be back" since he also had destroyers within 6 inches and that both destroyers and heavy destroyers count as the same type for we'll be back, since in the Necron list of the codex they don't have a seperate entry, thus there is no distinction between them beyond the weapons they use. Additionaly he was/pretended to be impressed that we didn't know this.

I claimed that they are a different unit no matter that they have the same profile and that one is Fast Attack while the other Heavy Support. The guy with the Tyranids took no position because he wasn't sure, while a friend who was present took the Necrons side.

Moreover in the end the Necron guy said that he even can join, after We'll be back, a heavy destroyer to the destroyer unit (if no other heavy destroyers were standing). Since the majority was with the Necron guy this is how it was played.

I tottaly disagree with this. what do you guys think?

The only thing they share is their stats line,
but otherwise they're different units, with different titles, costs and sections in the army list.

I agree with you, for me it's not of the same type and WBB shouldn't be allowed.

The fact they don't share the same army slot should be enough to prove it.

IMO, if there are multiple units in the same codex entry, then they are considered the same 'type', regardless of the FoC slots they use, for the purpose of WBB.

As for the Destroyer joining Heavy Destroyers, thats a no-no. units cannot join together if they are deployed separately! Same for our combat squads.

Thats my personal opinion. I'm sure the other lads here will have their own take on things.

We are now up against live, hostile targets. So, if Little Red Riding Hood should show up with a bazooka and a bad attitude, I expect you to chin the b!tch.

My missus says I've got the mental age of my unborn baby girl, but what does she know?

Thanks guys! At last someone agrees with me.

His basic argument to back it all up is that, beyond the same stats, there is no seperate entry in the army list of Necrons in either the Codex or in the BRB.

He totally pulled a fast one! And by the sounds of it knew he was breaking the rules.

I would try and get an oppinion from people in the shop. Or email GW and print it out then show him their reply. (they do get back to you - I forget the email add though)

Dont let him get away with it again!

He did indeed pull a fast one - and his argument that the Heavy Destroyers could join the other unit is totally wrong as WR Clean Rabbit pointed out. This also lends even more weight to the arguement that they can't use the other unit for their WBB roll as well.
I've just spoken to my mate who plays Necron's and after he stopped laughing he said the guy is a cheat - there were a few extra words in there but I thought I'd best not use them - this being a family forum
