I've played EVE for three years, since 2005 to 2008.

A great experience, and by far the best MMO I've played.

By warned, although, that EVE is one of the most time consuming RPG.
The learning curve is volontary very long, to select an 'elite' player base (words from EVE CCP CEO himself).

To achieve something in this game you must put in a lot of energy.
I end up with a ~30M Caldari/Minmatar skill point character which is the char I prefer through all games
I played.

My advice : It's good if you're a student or have a lot of spare time.
If not... you could be disappointed by the hardcore level most players put in this game.
An example : While you can pilot from the start a simple shuttle, It takes Three years of skilling
to pilot a Capital Ship (pilot it good, I mean)

EVE is a real different experience compare to more classic MMO.

I won't play it again since I don't want to ruin my mariage (I speak seriously here), but try it definitely.

Do not be afraid by 0.0 security. Yes, it's a jungle compare to Empire,
but the best EVE experience is when you join a 0.0 corporation or alliance.

Oh, and In this game you can achieve nothing alone. Really.

I ran 6 months in EVE about 3 years ago with a group of friends as we struggled to find something decent to play online together. We could have wasted our lives playing that game!

I got out as I was continually overwhelmed by the vast quantity of things to do and places to go and instead went back to my FPS roots.

Its a great game if you're single and have nothing better to do with every waking hour of your life....

We are now up against live, hostile targets. So, if Little Red Riding Hood should show up with a bazooka and a bad attitude, I expect you to chin the b!tch.

My missus says I've got the mental age of my unborn baby girl, but what does she know?

Wow I knew it was involved and complicated but that is insane. Odd though, a buddy of mine has been playing for three years and he kinda said the opposite. He says that its perfect for married life because he doesn't have to constantly play, he runs a couple missions and then just trains skills.

Oh, yes, I missed something !

There is two ways to play EVE :

In Empire (constellation run by computer AI) :

One can effectively play alone and play as a casual.
The security is guaranted by CONCORD.
Everybody will be destroyed quickly if they attack you with no reasons.

But I see two problems to this playstyle :
- No offense to your buddy, but I found the AI missions to be pretty boring.
Oddly enough, if game in 0.0 is refreshing, the automatic quests in EVE are a lot of worse than WoW.
Repetitive, boring, long (IMO). But I know a couple of mission-fans who would say the opposite, so...

- It can give you a sense of false security.
One can declare a corporation war and then CONCORD won't protect you no more.
It's a headache for those who play alone, because you begin to be afraid to log in,
because you can be chased and destroyed anywhere in the space.

Nothing like losing your full implanted clone worth 500 M isks in a 5 vs you fight. :x

Pretty annoying when a little pirate corporation declare you war two followings weeks.
Ask you buddy how he manages his corporation wars, this is always an interesting answer to get.

In 0.0 security level (free constellation to be owned and disputed by players) :

There, it's the jungle. CONCORD does not come here.
Players corporation must secure their space themselves, and construct their own station
to get the sovereign on the constellations.

It's a complete different game than the life in station in Empire.

To me, it's the real goal of EVE, the very essence of the game :

Players owned space with their own rule and society, market, policies...
The life is harsh here, but rewarding.
You can gain quickly a good amount of isks,
you'd have to work for month in Empire for that.

Here is the true experience of EVE you won't find in others MMOs.
A universe to conquer, immense and beautiful.

Very often people follow this scheme :
They start in Empire, learn the basics, play the AI mission, begin to be bored,
migrate to 0.0.
Then after 2 or 3 years of intense gaming, they retire and migrate back in Empire,
becoming casuals players.

So your buddy is right : you can play as a casual, but you miss a bit the point of the game (again, IMO)
And frankly, the Empire part of the game is not very entertaining, compare to others MMO.
I mean, If you look for good automatic quests, EVE is clearly not the best game, as it focus on free will
and free opportunities between real players in a SF world.

BUT : you can always start the game and stay in Empire for a while, then see if 0.0 appeals you ?
Definitely try the both part of the game.
EVE is very huge, and your experience could differ from mine and CR's one.

'Fly safe' ;)
