Hi guys I've just order some bits so as to convert a LR I have into a LRR/LRC. I've found tutorials regarding the process of magnetizing guns, doors etc. My main problem though is how I will be able to "unglue" the old doors and guns in oder to put the new ones. Do you have any ideas? As far as I've tried, it seems that the guns/doors won't come out and I don't want to brake it.

Hey, glad to see you're making a good move with your LR.

From experience working with 2nd hand Preds/Rhinos, your knife is your best friend here. I'd certainly cut your old doors off - i believe the kits you've bought come with spares so you should be safe there.
The guns, again, I'd cut off. You could cut along the original mounts to try and keep the 'gun unit' whole and should provide enough material to bond the magnets to.

Magnetizing is tricky at best, so try with one of the new kit parts first, and get a good grasp as to how to bond the magnet on to the gun without it looking too obvious, then move on to the rest, and save the removal of the original parts to last.

WR. Jasper has lots more skill with this than I do, so I'm certain he'd give you some more pointers too.

The possibility to "unglue" things depends on the used glue.
-plastic glue will melt both parts a bit and cant be unglued without damage.
-superglue is either super and is also hard to unglue or is s u p e r crappy and will fall off before you replace anything.
- 2 component-glue used for non-plastics is as hard ungluable as the other two. Either good and resists or crappy and breaks when you dont want it.

This may leave you with the unwanted option of cutting off the old parts and replacing them.

Or just follow my advice and buy a second LR.....

Like Fhad has said plastic glue is a nightmare for "ungluing" hence why on most of my conversions and such I use superglue which just snaps off. Epoxy resin or two part glue is generally a case where the model will break before the bond does.

Tbh mate doors are a pain to get off, but if you run your knife down the edges a few times you should begin to get something in the gap and lever it out. This works with super glue or light use of plastic glue, as you apply strain to the nearest bonds and stress to those in the opposite corner. Glue doesn't like stress or strain forces. i use a sculpting tool and just feel to see if it gives, if it doesn’t work from the opposite corner, if it does apply a little more pressure, this will tell you if the door or the glue bond is taking the force. It'll take time though. So treat it like a woman and be patient and gentle.

If however it has been glued with plastic glue like GW's, be prepared to sacrifice the door. You can buy doors from bits sites like bitzbox.co.uk and you will have to as there is no real way of breaking the bond, even if you run your knife round the edges there is no way to cleave it from the back. Best way, create a hole in the centre and work out. Means you will need a new door, but you shouldn't have to cut through the more expensive side armour.

In the following section all the “magnets I refer to will be rare earth magnets.

As for magnets they are a little pet peeve of mine :P never get them right, but the gun mounts is easy enough, a 1mm magnet in each corner and the opposite polarities in the side armour should be more than enough to keep it in place. If the magnets aren't strong enough add another in the centre along the top, as gravity will be the thing making it fall out.
You could however just pin them and have pins poking from the side armour and corresponding holes in the door or the sponson, it would work well with the doors (although getting the depth of the hole right may be a struggle). Use the above technique for the sponsons if gravity is playing its usual trick.

Swapping the actually weapons in the gun mounts may be a bit harder, but one technique i have seen is to cut away a length of the central column from each end and replace it with a magnet, (about 1mm x 1mm) and then fill each hole at the top and bottom of the mount (where the column fits in) with a magnet of opposite polarity. This allows them to move and be replaced, add a targeting system to the top with another magnet and you should be ok.
Note; this isn’t my idea and has a tendency for the weapons to fall from their mounts, It should as you have two magnets holding it in place but a simple knock of the weapons could leave them out of the magnets field and falling to the ground.
I would use a similar system and either stack up rare earth magnets to increase the magnetic field, or drill a hole through the centre of the column, and slide in a bit of metallic wire, like pinning wire. This will link the two magnets at the top and bottom and increase the overall fixing just that little bit.

If you need any more help just ask, and I hope it all goes well for your plans :D.

Thanks guys. It seems I'll buy a new LRC/R (since I have used GW's Plastic glue) and with the conversion kit and some RE magnets I have I'll do the work.

If this is the conversation kit you mean then you probably want another standard Land Raider ;)
