I've been thinking about how combat squads work and I'm wondering at what point can you split them. Obviously your supposed to split them during deployment. But if you were to deploy a squad of 10 in a rhino could you split them when they got out? IMO you could easily declare them combat squads at the start of the game them split them off when they get out of the rhino. Others so no because you can only have one squad in a transport. My argument is that rhinos are no longer dedicated transport vehicles. The entry in the codex simply says transport capacity of 10 models. And I don't recall seeing anywhere it says one squad to a transport at a time and the person who disagrees with me can't find it either.

What do we all think?

You break into combat squads during deployment. When you do that, they effectively a separate units. The only exception is unit using drop pods. They can break into combat squads when they landed.

No exception for Rhinoes, LR and that is all there is to know.

LordAK has it perfectly.

A unit must combat-squad on deployment with the sole exception of units arriving via deepstrike, who separate on landing.
Infiltrators, Outflankers, Reserves and units deployed normally must all be split the second they get put on the board.
Units deployed in vehicles must be split such that one combat squad is outside the vehicle with the other inside if you wish (example - tactical squad split such that the heavy weapon and 4 marines are outside the vehicle deployed on the left hand home objective, the special weapon and sarge are in a razorback on the right hand side of the board)

We are now up against live, hostile targets. So, if Little Red Riding Hood should show up with a bazooka and a bad attitude, I expect you to chin the b!tch.

Some fine answers here. ^

You combat squad at deployment.
- one or none combat squad may stay in a transport ( except DP, with them you disembark and split ).
- only attached characters may leave at their pleasure.
- how should 2 combat squads inside a transport fit with "split at deployment" ?

Your right all of you. I've read through the transport section of the rule book again and it says very clearly only squad plus and independant character you want in a transport at once. I feel kinda stupid now.
